Selected from Carlton's only published work, these two madrigals were chosen for brass quintet because they are originally in five parts, are not that well known, and reflect a compositional style that lies in between the earlier Elizabethan style of William Byrd and the more dazzling later style of Thomas Morley. Carlton's music is marked by strong rhythmic counterpoint, frequently placing three-pulse accents within duple meter. The two madrigals are When Flora Fair and All Creatures Then. Applying vocal concepts to the playing of these will present the best tone color and texture. Interesting fare for both player and listener.
