Written in 1909, twelve years after he had gained fame with Maple Leaf Rag, Solace is Joplin's only work composed in tango rhythm. It is certainly more reflective of the composer's innate melodic lyricism and demonstrates why Joplin was one of America's most sensitive and under rated melodists. Arranged by Keith Mehlan (Tubalation Rag), here is lyrical Joplin at his finest and a lovely change of pace for brass quintets who are ragged-out!
