Jesus, Joy of Man's Desiring for Solo Piano

Jesus, Joy of Man's Desiring comes from Bach's cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben ("Heart and mouth and deed and life"), BWV 147. It is one of Bach's most well-known cantatas due in part to the final movement containing the chorale Jesus, Joy of Man's Desiring. The chorale melody was composed by hymn-writer Johann Schop (1590-1664). The text is by Martin Jahn (or Janus, 1620-1685) and the first line of the text in the original German is "Jesus bleibet meine Freude" thus the title being Jesus, Joy and not Jesu, Joy which was actually the text translation by the English poet Robert Seymour Bridges (1844-1930). In this arrangement, Seymour Bernstein has made a wonderfully playable version for solo piano that can be used for many occasions. The fingerings suggestions by Seymour and pianist Elizabeth Wolff assist the performer in bringing out the appropriate voicing. The original German text and translation are included in the score.
