Five for Five was written for the faculty brass quintet at Bowling Green State University. It is a light, engaging 12-minute work easily accessible to general audiences and ensembles of intermediate ability as well as college/professionals, and is suited for recitals or just about any type of venue. The "cyclical" part of the title refers to the five movements being linked by a motive commencing with a rising fourth whose transformation throughout the work is easily followed. The movements are titled as contrasting moods: I. Jocular, begins in clownish fits and starts, and exposes the melodic and rhythmic germs for the other movements; II. Plaintive, is strictly lyrical, showcasing the singing subtleties of the ensemble; III. Bold, is rhythmically-driving, with a polyphonic excursion; IV. Reminiscent, serves as a short, lyrical "time out," and bridge to V. Ala Samba, an exuberant, toe-tapping dance with fairly complex rhythmic interplay, especially among the inner voices, that will prove about the only significant technical challenge. Recommended.
