About This Score

English Parlour Suite

transcribed by Lawrence David Eden

From the editor of our Jacobean Suite and Three Carols for Brass comes a collection for brass quintet of English madrigals. Featuring music by Thomas Greaves (c. 1604-?), John Wilbye (1574-1638), and John Farmer (c.1565-1605). The pieces are: Come Away Sweet Love, Flora Gave Me Fairest Flowers, Fair Phyllis I Saw. The madrigal originated in Italy around 1320 and became popular in England around 1580 when a collection of Italian madrigals were published in London. Within a few years, madrigal singing was a popular form of entertainment in England. Madrigals adapt well to brass instruments. "Eden's transcription of these three madrigals...can serve as an excellent introduction to Renaissance music, specifically the English madrigal ...overall quality of the individual parts is quite good."
